Opportunities Through Music
HMDT's Opportunities Through Music (OTM) project began in 1997, and provides local participants with access to a range of professional musicians who encourage, guide and support their music making at all levels of ability. OTM also provides performance opportunities and experience; supports participants interested in developing skills as music workshop leaders; develops links between local residents, musicians and arts organisations; and encourages participants to establish regular music groups and activities of their own, in an attempt to help self-supporting music projects flourish.
OTM activities are designed to encompass a broad range of musical styles from different cultural traditions, and seek to promote the cultural interests of the participants through workshops including Instrumental lessons, Turkish Saz and Song, Poetry and Songwriting, Line Dancing, DJ courses, Music Technology, African dance and drumming, and Pensioners' Choirs.
Since 1997, the project has created a number of music opportunities throughout the Borough including:
a sustained 5 year project involving 500 people each year on Clapton Park Estate;
providing support for MDMD to provide music tuition for young people on the Nightingale Estate;
music workshops on Woodberry Down Estate, including Let's Make Tracks and Line Dancing;
the establishment of Turkish Saz and Song classes on the Kingsmead and Stamford Hill Estates;
an inter-estate DJ/MC competition and the Stonebridge Park fun-day near Haggerston Estate ;
and the Beatbox Roadshow – a series of songwriting, composition, music technology and recording workshops with young people from five estates including Frampton Park Estate, the Grove Project and Queensbridge Estate.
