Tutti Frutti
Tutti Frutti was a music and literacy project which introduced the Under 5s to healthy eating and led to the creation of An Invite from the Queen a new illustrated story book musical about fruits from around the world.
Writer Joe Coelho worked with 50 children from Wentworth Nursery and Gainsborough Primary School to create ideas and words for the new story book and explored their knowledge of where fruits come from and how they grew and tasted! Additional workshops also took place as part of a family learning course as a means of engaging parents and developing literacy skills.
The children also worked with music leaders to develop a range of musical skills involving rhythm, melody, movement and action. Many sessions involved work with guest artists representing a range of multi-cultural musical traditions which introduced children to the sounds and instrumentation from many countries enabling the children to experience and where possible, try out instruments and music ranging from the bagpipes, medieval violin and baroque trumpet to South American pan pipes and charango, African dance and djembe, Indian dance and tabla, and accordion. Composer Matthew King then led several composition workshops to set the story to music and he and the children worked with the musicians to try out sounds and musical ideas for the new songs.
The final phase of the project included Neil Irish creating his illustrations for the book and a unique opportunity for some of the children to work in a recording studio to perform the songs alongside the professional musicians.
The culmination of the project is An Invite from the Queen; an illustrated musical story book, accompanied by a CD recorded by the artists and children involved in the project and narrated by renowned actor Griff Rhys-Jones.
